NASA Langley Research Center

Hampton. Seventeen-person department works closely with NASA Langley and Jefferson Lab. Research includes work on chemical sensors, oxidation catalysts, polymer synthesis in zero-gravity.

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility

Newport News. The Jefferson Lab uses a continuous electron beam accelerator to probe the nature of matter through research into high-energy physics. A related project, the Free Electron Laser project, is being used to develop new materials at a molecular level.

University of Virginia Department of Chemistry

Charlottesville. Midsized chemistry department with 28 faculty members and 120 graduate students. Disciplines include synthetic inorganic chemistry, spectroscopy and laser interactions with matter.

University of Virginia Department of Chemical Engineering

Charlottesville. Department with 12 faculty members conducts research into such fields as chemical and molecular simulation, electrochemical engineering, heterogenous catalysis and reaction engineering, and materials and interfacial phenomena.

Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Chemistry

Richmond. Graduate and undergraduate chemistry program with 17 faculty members covering a spectrum of disciplines. Faculty includes 2002 Nobel Prize winner John Fenn.
